Tavkveri
Kartli's gentle red
Tavkveri is a red grape indigenous to the Kartli region of Georgia, where it has long been grown across the vineyards around Ateni and the wider Gori area. It is the gentlest of the local reds — naturally light and approachable rather than bold — and at Château Ateni it adds a soft, friendly character to our wines.
Tavkveri is low in tannin and pale in the glass, ripening to a light, translucent colour rather than a deep red. This makes it well suited to fresh, easy-drinking reds and to delicate rosés with bright red-fruit notes — wines meant to be enjoyed young, chilled in summer and served alongside a Georgian table.
At Château Ateni, Tavkveri shapes our Tavkveri Rosé and also lends a touch of red fruit to our Khidistauri blend. Among our sparkling wines, it brings colour and fruit to the Elisabedi Rosé Brut.
